Brett graduated in 2005 from the photojournalism program at Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green. Over the past decade, he has worked as a professional freelance photojournalist, commercial and advertising photographer. He has received national and regional awards for his photography, including first place recognition from Columbia University, Kentucky Press Association, Kentucky News Photographers Association, and the South Carolina News Photographers Association. While in school, he won the 2002 College Photographer of the Year award for sports photography, and the 2003 William Randolph Hearst Award in the news and sports category.

Among his clients are the State Media Company, The Associated Press, The New York Times, USA Today, The Washington Post. His photographs have been published in Time, Newsweek, Der Spiegel, National Geographic, People, Southern Living, and on countless news websites, billboards, and television programs.
